Politically Homeless

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters in Marion County, Florida who consider themselves to be "Politically Homeless". We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by "politics as usual". Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others stay registered with a party only to vote in primaries, but no longer identify with the party's current political direction. We encourage you to post your comments.

Governor Crist: How Is He Doing?

Governor Charlie Crist has completed his first 100 days in office. Media reports and recent polls are indicating a very high (historic) level of satisfaction with the direction he is setting for our State. Some statewide polls report a 70%-80% favorable rating. Polls in Marion County also give him a similar positive rating.

Of course, 100 days is a short time frame in a four-year term. However, Governor Crist seems to have initially established a good relationship with the Republican leadership in our State Legislature, the Democrats and the media. What do you think?

What are your impressions of Governor Crist’s early days on the job?

I’m OK with one party that represents the wishes of 75% + of the citizens over two that are at odds with one another and represent only the outer left and right fringes of two parties. How about you?

If things keep going the way they are, many of you Marion County folks will no longer be politically homeless.

Property Insurance reform isn't quite working out the way it was supposed to.

Property tax "reform" isn't going anywhere right now (which is probably good for the state, in my opinion.)

Despite the media fawning all over Crist, its been a pretty lackluster first few months.

Nonetheless, I'd give Crist a thumbs up for now. He's managed to give felons who've done their time their rights back. He's also managed to bring the minority party to the table on key issues, instead of alienating them (as any good leader does.) To top it all off, he's managed to really tick off the Jeb wing of the party, which is good for everybody. Kudos to Governor Crist (for now.)

I'll let you know what I think after I get my home insurance bill in July and my property tax bill in November.

My first three months with my first wife were great. The next 15 were the pits. After 18 months, divorce. I have learned caution. The same goes with judging our Governor.

Obama and Crist, a great team for 2008! Why not? Crist has become a Democrat.

That would be a tough combination to beat. Hillary better take note.

I did not vote for Crist. However, he is doing with much less controversy many of the things Jim Davis would have tried to do. I’m still in a wait and see mode. What gets accomplished on education issues is of most importance to me.

If this is what the Senate calls property tax relief, then I’m going to be very, very disappointed in Crist if he lets them get away with this wimpy, half-assed plan! Now we'll see if Crist has any balls.

“Senate Property Tax Bill Has Less Savings”

By: Mary Ellen Klas & Marc Caputo
Miami Herald

After six weeks of public hearings and secret meetings to crunch numbers, the state Senate today will release a tax-cutting plan that seeks to lower Floridians' tax bills -- but also lower expectations over how much they will save.

In contrast with a radical and headline-grabbing plan pushed for weeks by House Speaker Marco Rubio of West Miami, the Senate's plan is bipartisan, far less threatening to local governments and won't raise the state sales tax.

It also will give homeowners a smaller tax break.

Now we get into some real meaty issues for our new Governor. Let’s see if he caves in to the limp-wristed Senate and their washed down tax proposal. He better start beating on the Senators instead of out doing photo shoots.

Whoops---limp wristed may have been a poor choice of words.

If you are not happy with where the property tax solution is going, and many people aren't, then go to Tallahassee and let our Governor and the Legislature know about your dissatisfaction.

There will be a “Citizen Property Tax Relief Day” on Tuesday, April 17, 12:30 – 2:00 PM. For details and bus pick up schedules go to:

One word is between us and good property tax reform:

DEMOCRATS.

Yep, so much for this big non-partisan love in of the Governors. Now the real Democrats will come out to compromise tax reform and then blame it on the Republicans in control. I could see it coming.

Don’t worry, it’s all political “role playing” by Crist, Rubio and Pruitt. I’ve already posted this to four other blogs today. These guys are doing what they agreed to keep the media and taxpayers off guard. Now they will put in place what they pre-agreed at the start of the legislative session. Never fear, the end result will be somewhere between the House and Senate versions. Isn’t that the way the show is played on the political theatre stage? Actually, Crist will now play the role of “great conciliator” and get the deal signed. Then the media and everyone will give him credit for his leadership on the issue. Are we citizens gullible or what?

I hope you are correct, because there is a lot of work to be done to reconcile the big differences between the House and Senate plans. As someone said, who cares who gets the political credit, just give us some property tax relief.

Crist pushing through the free ride for felons to regain their civil rights is an abomination. The Attorney General is the only one who voted with the people and not with the NY Times.

Charlie Crist is on a roll. Locally, Harris is out and Baxley and Kelly should be next to go. How sweet it is!

Thank God for Marco Rubio! Crist is a figure head and that won't cut it with many voters when it wears off.

I'm waiting for a big hurricane and then I'll tell you whether he is a good governor or just playing to the populist theory. His insurance solution will get a big test.

John Edwards: $400 for a haircut.

Charlie Crist: $9 for a haircut.

Defines the big spenders.

Maybe Charlie Crist needs to take a lesson from the John McCain story (WSJ) concerning what he's always known, what he was taught, and what he experienced in war:

“The more time you spend in the air, the more likely you are to get dinged.”

I'm waiting for him to save the day for taxpayers on tax reform. Will we be waiting and waiting and waiting......?

My homeowners policy sure wasn't anything special. It went UP not down as the Guv promised.

Crist's ratings are dropping. Now at 62%. That's still very good. Special Session of the legislature may be a make or break for him.
