Politically Homeless

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters in Marion County, Florida who consider themselves to be "Politically Homeless". We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by "politics as usual". Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others stay registered with a party only to vote in primaries, but no longer identify with the party's current political direction. We encourage you to post your comments.

Filling Argenziano's Senate Seat: Local Political Intrigue!

The recent announcement of Dennis Baxley’s intent to run for the State Senate seat of Nancy Argenziano (in what seems the likely event of her appointment as a PSC commissioner) has set off our local politicos to speculate what might happen. In particular, there could be major trickle down impact at our local level. Baxley’s son, Damon, has already expressed his intent to run to replace his father as State Representative.

Here is the word on the street concerning possible players in the political intrigue that could result:

Argenziano’s Senate Seat

In addition to Dennis Baxley, the media reports two other Republicans are definitely interested in the spot. Richard Corcoran, former Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House Marco Rubio. Charlie Dean, current member of the House who represents part of Argenziano’s senate district. The Dems are having difficulty coming up with potential candidates. Probably because Governor Crist and the Republicans have effectively neutered their influence with the overwhelming public support of the direction things are going at the state level!

Baxley’s House Seat

On the local scene, there are several Republican candidates in the mix for Baxley’s seat. Some have already declared interest and some are still speculation. Baxley’s son, Damon, is a definite candidate. County Commissioner, Andy Kesselring is a declared candidate. In the category of those with possible interest are: School Board member Kurt Kelly; City Councilman Kent Guinn; City Councilman Dan Owen; former County Commissioner Randy Harris.

Local Ramifications

Obviously, if any of those above declare to run, there could be several local openings to be filled via temporary appointments by the Governor or by declaring Special Elections.

Among these would be: Kesselring’s County Commissioner seat. Potential candidates include: Jimmy Walton, who ran for this spot before and has declared his intent to run again; School Board member Sue Mosley; former City Councilman Mike Amsden.

Additionally, two School Board and two City Council seats could also become vacant.

So tell us, what have you heard and who are some candidates not on the above lists. Especially, any Democrats. Or are they “missing in action”?

Here is your chance dems!! A 26 year old with the only qualifications of having the intials D.B.(referring to Damon Baxley for some of you). Reminds me of the race last year with young Thurman vs. Larry Cretul. Surely this will be an interesting race since there could some challengers with a slightly better resume than just " vote for me, my dad is dennis"

I have not heard of any interest from Randy Harris....BUT:

If he is....the anger of taxpayers at the E-One fiasco would place him in a perfect position to capitilize on the situation. All of the other possible candidates, especially Guinn and Owen wouldn't have a snowballs chance if Harris runs. Andy wouldn't fare well either. My vote would be for Harris.

We'll see.

Richard Corcoran opened a campaign account yesterday and has already met with the editorial board of the Citrus County Chronicle. He has a head start because state lawmakers, his two competitors for the job, can’t raise money during the session. The guy may be tough to beat in a special election.

If a serious Dem gets into this race, it could be a real close election, especially if the Reps hammer each other. And they will! Baxley won't go home without a fight, Corcoran has given up a 6-figure job, & Dean is giving up a House seat. Look out!

To all of our cautious Toms. If Ms. Argenziano makes the final list of six that goes to the governor, she is most likely going to be selected. From the St. Pete Times:

Asked if he would pick Argenziano if he gets the chance, Crist said: "If I have a chance. I don't want to get the cart before the horse on this. I'm limited by the names that are presented to me."
"I think she's a very earnest public servant, and I think she's proven herself to be a consumer advocate,"

Crist said of Argenziano. "That means a lot to me, particularly as it relates to this appointment.”

The best person to replace Baxley: Kyle Kay.

No doubt about it---Kyle is far and away the most electable local person and the best of the city council listed as possibles.

Kyle Kay as a replacement for Baxley is an interesting suggestion. I would venture to guess that 2-3 of the people mentioned on the various lists of possibles for the State Representative position might just drop out and swing their support over to Kay if he were to decide to enter that race. Not sure he would want to commit the time and travel required that would cause him to have to give up his much better paying day job. However, crazier things have happened in local politics.

Loyalty and Kurt Kelly...That's an oxymoron! Kurt Kelly is only loyal to himself! He will run and step on whomever he needs too to get what he wants! Besides, Dennis promised Kurt the seat before he put his son out for it! Maybe Dennis is just as disloyal!

With Baxley running for Senate, does this mean he's got some kind of insight that Stearns isn't going to retire anytime soon? I've always assumed he was the heir apparent.

Does it bother anyone that Baxley based his whole recent reelection campaign on "effectiveness" and is now bailing on us? He took on the tough issues his first three terms so he could focus on the "bread and butter issues" in his last. Of course, his sponsored legislation this term is once again full of right wing and special interest fluff, with the exception of naming the bridge on 441 in honor of Judge Sweigert.

See the article below from a Tallahassee paper. If Nancy Argenziano is truly concerned about her district, maybe she will stay in place and protect us from Baxley.

Article published Mar 23, 2007
Baxley throws hat into ring
Sen. Argenziano may vacate for Public Service Commission seat
By Jim Ash
FLORIDA CAPITAL BUREAU CHIEF

Convinced that Sen. Nancy Argenziano has a valuable appointment sewn up, a powerful House leader today jumped into the race to replace her.

Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala and the speaker pro tempore, opened a campaign account to run for Argenziano's District 3 seat.

''The point is to let people know that I'm running, not that I'm just thinking of running,'' Baxley said.

Argenziano, R-Dunnellon, is one of 12 finalists who will appear before a special Senate panel on Monday to vet nominees for two vacancies on the Public Service Commission.

The panel is expected to forward the names of six candidates to Gov. Charlie Crist to fill the pair of seats.

If Crist chooses Argenziano, and she accepts, he will have to call a special election to replace her.

''It looks like there is going to be a special election,'' Baxley said. ''Sen. Argenziano is looking like a very good candidate for the Public Service Commission.''

Baxley said the timing is good for him, and could be so for another member of his family, his 26-year-old son, Damon Baxley.

A detective with the Marion County Sheriff's Department, Damon Baxley plans next week to file for his father's seat, the lawmaker said.

''I'm humbled that my son has chosen public service,'' Baxley said.

Baxley said he recently sold his Ocala home and lives in Argenziano's sprawling district that includes all or parts of 13 counties, including Leon.

Baxley will be hampered by House rules that ban him from fundraising while the Legislature is in session. But he has little to lose. Term limits will force him to step down from the House next year.

But the primary could get dicey.

The only other declared candidate if Argenziano departs is former chief of staff for House Speaker Marco Rubio.

Richard Corcoran, also convinced that the seat will open up, left his $175,000-a-year job in the speaker's office. Senators earn about $30,000 a year.

Argenziano has declined to speculate about the PSC job, or say if she would accept it if Crist picks her, but she is widely believed to have a leg up.

Argenziano worked with Crist on consumer legislation when both served in the Legislature.

''It's bittersweet for me because I'm concerned for my district,'' Argenziano said. ''It requires real work, not just some politician who is going to come in and give these counties lip service.''

I certainly appreciate the plugs posted above! Thanks. Politics for me is local. If it isn't a local race and it's not in my district, you will never see me running for it. I'm a die-hard homebody.

Regarding the Argenziano seat. I seriously doubt ANYBODY can get that seat without the blessing and endorsement of Nancy herself. If she does not endorse anyone, it's up for grabs BUT if she backs a candidate they will be all but a shoe in....125k or not.

Here is a paragraph from a press release announcing Mr. Baxley’s run for the State Senate:

“Dennis Baxley has been a great representative for Marion County and Ocala ,” said Ron Ewers, President of Class 1, Inc. and past chair of the Marion County Economic Development Council. “The business community of Marion County will be absolutely united in supporting his candidacy for Senate District 3.”

Note the commitment from Mr. Ewers that the local business community will be UNITED in supporting Baxley!!!!!

Here's a link to a map of Nancy's district. If Ewers thinks Baxley can win, he and Dennis better hit the highway. This is NOT an Ocala decision. In my wildest imagiantion, I can not see Nancy backing Baxleys bid for this seat.

Randy Ewers should be spending more time paying attention to the constant erosion of his support base. If he thinks grandstanding with the "voice" as a Mayor of the City speaking for all of the Businesses of Marion County goes to show just how big he thinks his britchs are. A silver spoon and a name can only get you so far.

Blogger commenting above. That was not Randy Ewers endorsing Dennis Baxley. It was his Father. Although, Randy Ewers probably feels the same way. Hey PWF why don't you tell us how you really feel about Kurt Kelly? We all know that you have been holding back! The joy that you must feel that your favorite political target is about to run for office must be be just so envigorating. We all know what a sense of purpose it gives to your life to attack Mr Kelly. Your typical yellow journalism way of attacking is fun for all to read but please that memory of yours does leave a bit to be desired. So please keep track of your attack subjects. The redundancy and duplication can be so boring. When for example you mischaracterize events as you have just done keep a list and cross it off. Is that too much to ask? Here let me get you started .. "The Kelly family are actually aliens from another planet" see.. done cross it off.....

Nope, I’m no sugar daddy. I’m much too happily married, with a great family for that!

I find it interesting that every time an attractive, young and successful female becomes a community leader, there is a small minded group who tries to claim sleeping around got her where she is. Around here most all of these claims are made by unattractive, older, less successful and jealous women who just can’t accept the hand life has dealt them. Too bad they are so unhappy and vindictive. Maybe some of them should become “sugar mommies”---might change their disposition.

I know Sue Mosley well enough that I won’t let smarmy sugar daddy accusations like you made influence me. Some of Kurt Kelly’s antics, that’s a much different story.

Let's say we've got a five way race of serious candidates (Damon, Kurtie, Stan Hanson, Kesselring, Amsden), it might only take 1500-2000 votes to win this thing. This isn't a race that's going to cost $100,000. If I'm running for this seat, I get a list of people who vote in every election, go through the list and find every name on the list that I know and make a personal phone call and ask them to come out and vote. That's all the campaigning you need to do. So, for all you politicos out there, think about how many friends and family you have that you can count on to come out and vote and do the math.

Jackie Wilson,

Don't forget if no other candidates but Republicans enter the campaign to replace Baxley, then it will be an open election and everyone can vote, including the Dems. That could change things.

But maybe he can explain that one on Bobby D's show too. Meanwhile, attack me instead of showing where I am off. Remember, I have had professionals after me in the past, so I can handle you. "Argenziano Advances in PSC Bid"

State Sen. Nancy Argenziano is a step closer to joining the Public Service Commission.

She was one of six people selected Monday afternoon by the Joint Committee on Public Service Commission Oversight. The others are Manuel Arisso, Beverly DeMello, Jeremy Susac, James R. Kelly and Nathan Skop.

The names now go to Gov. Charlie Crist, who will pick two.

The local political wars are just one step closer to beginning!

Ok PWF what are your "facts" re Kelly and Lunsford act? Lets see if you can stick to one charge at a time with facts and specificity. Not rumor, not yellow journalism just facts. Or are you going to continue the game of misdirection?
Ball in your court. Remember who what when etc.......

Checked out the map of Senator Argenziano’s district Mr. Thurow provided. Her district has only a piece of Marion County, mainly SW Marion. Except for a small piece (around Belleview) SW Marion is all Cretul country. Mr. Baxley better have Rep. Cretul on his side if he wants to make headway in a territory he doesn’t currently represent. Having Mr. Cretul’s backing, especially on our 200 corridor where Mr. Baxley has never had to win votes as a state Rep., will be important to his election. He will need every vote he can get from SW Marion in a district of 300,000+ voters of which 55% are Democrats.

At 11:28 PM, March 26, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And they probably won't have a candidate for the Baxley House seat either. The Dems are a real political machine in Marion County.

At 8:04 AM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You want George Bush style representation in Tallahassee for Marion County? Then vote for the Baxley duo or Kurt Kelly. They are all clones with the same dangerous political genetic defect as Bush.

At 8:45 AM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The SR 200 Corridor isn't anywhere near close to 55% Democratic. Someone pulled a number straight out of their hindquarters. According to the Supervisor's District Demographic Analysis for the '06 Elections, Ds make up 36%, Rs 46%, Is 11%, and Os 7% of the 200 Corridor.

Now, Cretul's overall district, which includes portions Alachua and Levy Counties, has more Democrats than Republicans.

At 8:49 AM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Whoops, my apologies to the anonymous poster who used the 55% figure. They were referring to Argenziano's entire district, NOT the 200 Corridor. Again, my apologies.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that Argenziano's district includes a lot of North Florida counties which are vastly Dixiecrat voters. Its far more Republican than numbers would have anyone believe.

At 9:43 AM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, North Florida numbers are just right for Charlie Dean. Sorry, Dennis.

At 11:29 AM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This race will not be about D's and R's. Ocala and Marion County politics are a side show for this race. They don't matter that much.

The people in Nancy's district really love what she has done for them. They don't want her to leave. It's about who will continue her work and who she will endorse. She may not endorse anyone but I'm sure she might "prefer" one candidate over another. That's all it will take.

At 1:46 PM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Argenziano endorses someone, it certainly won't be Dennis Baxley. They've had some tussles before. She knows Dennis is way too extreme for the district. I think she'll definitely work behind the scenes for Charlie Dean, if not endorse him outright. Corcoran is too close to Rubio and the Baxley wing of the party.

At 2:59 PM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Word is that the Dems will put former representative Dwight Stansel up for Argenziano's seat. He's a good old boy from somewhere around Live Oak. He was just term limited out last year, and his old seat has some significant over lap with this senate seat. He's a real Old Florida Democrat. I think he co-sponsored some of Baxley's gun laws. He'll take the rural counties hands down if he gets into this.

At 3:01 PM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say that Rubio is part of the Baxley wing of the party. He's not a right winger. He's pretty darned conservative, but he's no Bible thumper. I think they're encouraging Baxley to get into this race to get rid of him.

At 6:41 PM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jackie,

Think you may be wrong about Stancel. Everything I read says he will run for Tax Collector in his home county and has stated he has no interest in the Senate. He can make 2-3 times the Senate salary and not have the headaches he went through for eight years in T-Town.

Also, agree with you Baxley and Rubio aren't in the same league on political philosophy.

However, it might be interesting to have Baxley in the Senate to counter some of the liberal Republicans they have. I can see some sparks flying in that group if Baxley were there.

At 8:17 PM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have one very important question I'm going to ask all of the politicians running for Dennis Baxley's House seat:

"What is your position on using taxpayer money to give incentives to keep E-One in Ocala?"

The answer will determine who I vote for.

At 9:33 PM, March 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here we go again...okay if you are going to bash Kelly again, then Mosley is fair game as well. She needs to get her home life in order before ever thinking of running. May fool the local yocals but not on the state level.

Get ready for a big political surprise. Kurtie Kelly and Damon Baxley will “make a deal”. Damon will drop out and support Kurtie. As it looks today, that would leave Kurtie unopposed on the Republican side, and if no Democrat enters the picture he will win the State Rep. position by default. In return, Kurtie will give his full personal support to Dennis Baxley for State Senator and encourage his massive list of Catholic supporters in the Marion part of Senate District 3 to do the same.

Seems incredible, but may very well play out to be reality!

Don’t joke about Darlene. She could be the Marion County legislative delegations replacement for the “Water Lady” (Nancy Argenziano). Weesner might be just as aggressive (or more so) about water conservation as Argenziano has been. Kelly and some of the other candidates mentioned would probably negotiate our water rights away for personal political advancement.

Don’t forget, Weesner is a former teacher she also knows first hand the problems we have with education.

Under a rock, eh??? When I post, I post under my OWN name. And you post as Anonymous and claim I am under a rock! What a phoney fraud.

I do have a life and dont read or post on this blog or any other every day. Sometimes I have important things to do for several days at a time, like this past few days.

As for your questions, first about Catholics which I have posted before and which was repeated by another anon . . . ask yourself/ son/brother/friend if you/he did not go and talk to Bobby D and Father O about his stupid anti-Catholic comments. You/he have already admitted to those.

As for your question about Jessica's law, as yourself/ son/brother/friend if you/he did not go to Tallahassee and inquire of a legislator (while on our dime on school business) about changing the law to allow people who have been charged but not yet convincted of a crime from working on a school campus.

As a Christian, if you/he denies these, I will have to go back to the people who were stunned at your/his comment/action and see if they want to now say it didn't happen.

But certainly, you can not deny your/his effort to censure Ocala city cops for doing their job at Vanguard, and since the official minutes of the court session show you/he did appear as vice chairman of the Marion County School Board and go against the recommendation of the state and juvenile officials to get someone who violated the no tolerance anti gun law of the school system (you/he may have even made the motion to impose that no tolerance policy) released from custody. These kids then were nailed for botching an armed robbery with the same gun.

So out from under the rock I am.
Let me know when you have the courage of your convinctions and ae willing to sign your name. Until then, I could care less about your thoughts. --pwf

Suggest you get some counseling. Better yet, maybe you should stay off the blog. No one should be exhibiting the degree of personal hate, contempt and disdain for another individual that you do.

By the way, there are many parents who do not believe Mr. Kelly has done a good job on the School Board. We view him as a big talker who doesn't produce results. His constant pontificating is boring.

This is what makes politics interesting. We all view politicians differently based on our own personal critera.

Our School Board is a disaster and ALL of the five current members are involved in the inadequacy of the education my kids are receiving. Home schooling is looking better and better for our kids.

In my view, Mr. Kelly would bring no more to the table as a state legislator than he has as a School Board member.

What Mr. Kelly has or has not said about Catholics is of no concern to me. What he is not doing about education is!
