Politically Homeless

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters in Marion County, Florida who consider themselves to be "Politically Homeless". We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by "politics as usual". Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others stay registered with a party only to vote in primaries, but no longer identify with the party's current political direction. We encourage you to post your comments.

The voters wanted change and they will get it. The Amendment 1 vote was a little stronger Yes than I expected. Actually Marion County's vote was more in line with what I thought the State's would be. Look at Collier and Lee County; almost a 4:1 vote in favor of Amendment 1. Those are big numbers.

I would caution everyone to not expect the type of tax cut Charlie promised. This was his last big win and the dollars I will see will not be nearly as much as the state politicains promised. Let's see what the Constitutional Review Committee does now for the November ballot.

As to the national election, I will again predict a McCain/Huckabee ticket against Hillary and some big state Midwesterner.

I agree with much of the previous post although I hope McCain takes Crist as VP and gets him out of Florida. I want a Republican governor and not what he pretends to be!

McCain is going to be the Democrats worst enemy whether its Obama or Clinton. Don't think the Dems have a chance. Too many Dems who hate Hillary will now crossover.

The endorsement of Governor Crist was a big help. Crist will get a cabinet job. Also, poetic justice for the media. They have created Crist as the "Superman Governor" and he used that against the many media sources who were against Amendment One, including our own Star Blunder. They deserve what they are getting. Crist has even pissed off some Dems with his endorsement of McCain.

Wait until Rudy endorses McCain tomorrow and watch the armpits of Mitt Romney and the two Democrat candidates start to sweat heavily.

These dumb Republicans--according to the media. Don't you just love it!!!

Why was the Marion County result on amendment 1 below the statewide vote?

From what I hear there were Republicans who voted against it because Governor Crist supported it. Especially some of those considered to the right of Crist. Sort of a protest. Add the turnout of Democrats opposing it and you have a close count--just as happened. Anyone have a better idea?

Next step is to get the 1.35% amendment on the ballot. Would help second homeowners, which Amend. 1 did not, by capping ALL property taxes at 1.35% taxable value.

Beat down the doors of your senators and state rep.

Well could it be the politically homeless have found their candidate in John McCain?

I'd add an opinion as to why the Amendment 1 was so close in Marion. When I last saw a list of major employers in the county, the government (e.g., county, city, schools, etc.) was at the top of the list. Don't you imagine many of the government employees around here were concerned about losing jobs from the Amendment and voted against it?

10:17 PM--Some additional info on the vote by county:

Some of the biggest majorities for Amendment 1 were in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. The tax question was approved by 71 percent of Dade County, 7 percentage points higher than the state as a whole.

The two places most against it were Duval, where the Jacksonville political establishment was almost unanimously opposed, and Leon, the seat of state government in Tallahassee. The next largest county where it failed was Putnam (Palatka).

The amendment passed in 53 counties and lost in 14 mostly small, rural counties, where residents are concerned about how a cut in property taxes might erode their slim tax bases. A large county that was less enthusiastic about the tax than the rest of the state was Hillsborough, where it had 58 percent. It was very popular in Republican-dominated southwest Florida, cruising by a 5 to 1 margin in Lee County, 4 to 1 in Collier, 3 to 1 in Charlotte and 2 to 1 in Sarasota.

Department :

Attorney General Bill McCullaugh, Florida's guardian of family values, fearless attack dog of moral turpitude, saddles up with thrice married aduterious Rudy Gulliani, following 2 steps behind him everywhere on the campaign. A Attorney General spot on Rudy's cabinet ?

Two big loses for the AG,Rudy and Slot machines.

The City of Ocala, with little to sell, some would say nothing to sell, gets badly beaten up in their annexation attempt.

What were they thinking ??

Can you say 1976?!?!?!? McCain=Ford. Clinton-Obama=Carter.

The man with the most powerful message that year was the man who lost. Yes Ronald Reagan. McCain is borderline blasmephous to even mention his name in the same breath with Reagan. McCain will have his time in the sun this year and it will lead to a major defeat at the hands of the dems in November. And out of the ash with the help of a dem prez and deceptive republican that McCain is will come a new "reagan like" revolution just as it did in 1980.

Enjoy your time John!! We will begin the rebuilding after your defeat.

Republicans listen up !!

Newt, never to be counted out, Gingerich is paitently sitting on the sidelines, his recent manifesto, "Real Change" at his side, salivating over his fellow Republicans fighting amongst themselves over who isn't conservative enough and who is.

Kinda like Marion County Republicans arguing over who is Christian enough and who isn't Christian enough.

"Let them slug it out, beat each other to a pulp" leaving a vacum for good old Newt the old history prof to exploit just as he did with his manefesto for America the last time around.

Newt realized that this wasn't the year to jump into the fray, his party wasn't bloody enough, neither was the nation.

Sensing the saleability of change, Newt needed the credentials to run on, hence his book "Real Change" which deals with issues and answers , that are getting only lip service sound bites by candidates and their partys today.

Like Rudy,Newt's tawdry past will be mostly forgotten. Wasn't it Jerry Falwell, who has already blessed the repentive Newt.

Who ever is elected President this year is going to face a challenge unmatched since the Depression and World War 11.

There is nothing in my tea leaves that tells me we won't be faced with gridlock on Capital hill for the next 4 years regardless of who wins. Both partys will shamelessly pander to special interests, they just can't get it out off their systems.

Newt, armed with "Real Change" in his hand and mayhem in his heart, armored with teflon will be ready for the battle.

Newt Gingerich, the consumate historian, the savy political animal will be ready for take 2.

It will be very hard to deny him another chapter in American History.

Something from my hometown newspaper, Independent voters may have had more impact on yesterday’s election than is being discussed. It’s estimated that about 20% of the voters yesterday were Independents who switched to Republican either by the 29 day deadline or on Election Day at the polls. Election Day switching happened because the state recently received a new and faulty state voter registration database that had erased some people's party registration. Secretary of State Kurt Browning acknowledged the problem and gave the okay to poll workers to allow voters who showed no party affiliation to declare it on the spot on Election Day at the polls - so even though the registration change deadline passed, voters were able to switch on Election Day. Perhaps something needing additional investigation.

With Rudy Giuliani’s endorsement of John McCain today, comes what may be more good news for the McCain campaign. His rival, Mitt Romney, indicated today that he's not ready to commit to a costly campaign in the states holding primaries and caucuses next week.

Several Romney campaign officials reported that on the heels of a defeat in the Florida primary, Romney's campaign was not attempting to purchase television advertising time in any of the states on the Super Tuesday calendar.

I have previously pointed out that the sale tax for roads that lost by a wide margin last year countywide actually passed in three precincts in which more than ten votes were cast with each of these precincts being located within the City of Ocala.

The Amendment 1 vote yesterday provides further evidence that different attitudes toward taxes prevail in Ocala as compared to much of the rest of Marion County. Go to the Supervisor of Elections website at http://www.votemarion.com/ and click on “2008 Presidential Preference Primary Election Results” under “Election Night Results.” If you then scroll down to the results for Amendment 1 and click on the “Precinct Detail Map” option you will get a color-coded map showing by precinct where Amendment 1 got a majority of the vote and where it didn’t.

Notice that the precincts where Amendment 1 failed to get even a majority, much less the 60 percent necessary for passage, are clustered in the center of the Marion County map where Ocala is located.

Once again, we have evidence that citizens have geographically sorted themselves according their attitudes toward taxes and service levels.

Voice of Reasons says . . .

As a 20 year advocate of Gingrinch, I can sum up his ideas, strengths and weaknesses:

- Ideas -

Replace govt. functions with more efficient private companies. If can't do that, make govt. agency run like a business.

Information technology is vastly underused in government and medicine.

Education can be reduced to reading. If a student can learn to read and find information, education is inexpensive and much more effective.

America cannot not work without God.

- Strengths -

Most interesting speaker of all candidates. Always makes you think.

Relentless worker and thinker.

Focuses on and motivates grass roots.

Nice person and a patriot.

- Weaknesses -

Media hates him.

Tends to overextend himself and spread himself to thin. For instance, his downfall was that, while he was Speaker of the House, he was also building his candidate development organization GOPAC.

None of the candidates would select him as a VP running mate this go around for sure. Maybe he will look to get back into the legislative branch again.

He is a person worthy of Clayton's interest but he will have a very difficult time positioning himself as a serious presidential candidate for the future. He has the ideas of Reagan (a lot more actually) but he can never create the excitement of Reagan. We will have to wait for a big, athletic, movie star type optimist with the convictions of Reagan.

He could fill one of several cabinet level positions. Would be a great addition. I disagree with Brian Creekbaum about Gingrich's likeabilty. I like him much better as a person than grumpy old John McCain. McCain's testy personality will start to surface once things get down to 2-3 in a debate. Watch the sparks fly from him. Also, I don't think he's very smart. Better have some people like Gingrich around him if he gets elected. He and Bush are about equally "bright"

Pro-tax? I prefer to think of it as being pro quality of life with an understanding that quality of life isn’t free. People in Marion County who prefer a different deal have many residential options that don’t entail receiving an ad valorem tax bill with a line item for the City of Ocala.

If you patronize businesses in Ocala, though, you are helping to pay for government services in Ocala because you are helping to pay the utility and tax bills of the businesses you patronize, an economic reality lost on some in Ocala government who claim non-residents demand city services while paying nothing for them.

zjanichFrom the WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??Department.

The other day, mid morning, we stopped to shop at Target.

While waiting for my wife, I went to the grill for a cup of coffee.

"A dollar fifty five " ??, I queried in disbelief . No longer upwardly mobil, with no disregard of cost,I passed, knowing that I could get a "senior" coffee at McDonalds for $80 cents on the the way home .

Yes, Starbucks in Target as well as practically every developed and undeveloped strip mall in Florida and everywhere, I assume.

The many months that I spent in Gainesville all day, I saw students outside the several Starbucks and other Latte houses spending their student loan or dad and mom's money on high priced coffee that they just seemed not to be able to live without.

Starbucks and it's founder Howard Shultz could do no wrong, the Starbucks stock was hot, stories abounded about the marketing genius of Mr. Shultz.

Well, as you probaly know , The glitter is off Starbucks, lo and behold they have found out that their price increases as well as the fact that customers are diminishing is having a severe effect on it's once magic bottom line. Can you imagine that ?

Recessions are always unkind to the excesses of any kind.

For us, it's Sam's caffinated coffee mixed with whatever exotic coffees youthfull family members bring with them when they visit, and leave behind for their parents, who after all, ought to get a life and live a little.

To both Starbucks and those of the "I want it all and I want it now" generations who supported them as part of their excesses, I ask,

What were you thinking ?? That the good times would never end ?? That a cup of $1.55 coffee was an entitlement ?

What were you thinking ?

I bumped into a senior person with the Supervisor of Elections office over at the county courthouse today and asked about the report on this blog about precinct turnouts in excess of 100 percent in the presidential preference primary just held. He said it was true that turnouts in excess of 100 percent were reported for some precincts.

Apparently, there was some mis-distribution to voters of ballots that were identical except for the precinct label on the ballot. You never want to see mistakes like this happen, but apparently it does not mean that any voter got any more than one vote or voted in any election to which they were not entitled to vote. Apparently, the effect was over-reporting of the turnout for some precincts and under-reporting of the turnout in other precincts.

Barack Obama ranked as the most liberal senator of 2007, according to newly released National Journal ratings.

National Journal has tabulated the rankings of U.S. senators and representatives based on their votes for the last 27 years, and found that in 2007 both Obama and his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination Hillary Clinton shifted to the left in the run-up to the primaries.

Obama went from being the 10th-most-liberal senator in 2006 to the front of the line, while Clinton went from being the 32nd-most-liberal senator to the 16th-most-liberal last year.

Despite the bitterness pervading the campaign between Clinton and Obama, National Journal pointed out the two have very similar voting records. The year-in-review showed the two differed on just 10 of the 267 measure they both voted on.

The article said the two candidates were like “fraternal policy twins,” demonstrating only slight differences.

Thank you for the tip on the Calculated Rist blogspot.

A real home run with excellent links.

Jimmy Rodgers is quoted as saying we will have the worst recession since World War 11.

Regarding the fact that 30% of community banks have mortages on their books that exceed their capitalization by three times as well as having heavy exposure to local contractors, this should be a concern here locally.

I am still waiting to read about local housing numbers and joblessness in Marion County in the Star Banner.

Local economic coverage is also lacking.

Capitol One has challenged people with the slogan "What's In Your Wallet " ? Too many wallets are empty now and it will get much worse before it gets any better .

Honest dialogue about local housing and the local economy is lacking here in Marion County. Instead it's business as usual, literally. "If we don't know about it, it can't hurt us " is the prevailing wisdom of our media and business leaders.

If I wasn't so technically challenged, I would start a blog spot on these subjects as well as a few others.

I appreciate Politically Homeless and it's many bloggers and non bloggers providing me with a forum to economics and housing which , in my mind very pressing issues of our time.

Any blogger/voter who doesn’t believe Hillary Clinton has a severe left tilt needs to do some research. On another thread, I encouraged folks to read a new book written by Jonah Goldberg, “Liberal Fascism”. Even if you don’t want to buy and/or read the entire book, at least go to a bookstore, pick up the book, sit down and read chapter 9 (“Brave New Village: Hillary Clinton and the Meaning of Liberal Fascism”). After reading the chapter, you may wonder how Obama can be rated as more liberal than Clinton. And, no, I‘m not getting any kickback from the sale of Goldberg’s book!

To discuss Fascism on this thread is a real stretch but so was my comments on Starbucks and latte. I guess both Stan and I wanted a change of subject.

Before bloggers and or readers of this blog rush out to buy Joshua Greenburg's book "Liberal Fascism", permit me to save you some money.

On page two of this dubious tome, Mr. Greenburg admits that he really do not know know what the word fascism means acknowledging"not even the professionals have figured out what exactly fascism is." Mr Greenburg is no professional, some would say a real hack.

I heard Mr. Greenburg interviewed about about "liberal fascism"[I forget who and where ]. AS I listened I thought to myself that Mr.Greenburg was grasping at historical straws to make his case, a weak one indeed.

The discussions of Fascism of which there have been many, so many in fact that the subject has become diluted over time because of historical revisionism by the academic participants is soooo yesterday, that to attempt to put the subject into today's political arena is an effort by the far right wing, of wich Joshua Goldberg is a staunch member of,to further distort history as well as distort liberal point of view.

Quote Wicksepedia : "In contemperary political discourse, fascist has become a slur used by adherents of some idealogies to describe their opponents ". This kind of nails it, doesn't it.

Blog readers can read all the negative things they want about Hillary Clinton in Bay Buchanans book[ the title escapes me ] one of several that I have read that have helped me determine that she is not my candidate of choice.

I watched my father being vilified by Senator Joseph McCarthy, as being a communist, after World War 11. This, inspite of the fact, that my father had the highest security clearance available to any civilian during the war.

Joshua Greenburg is attempting to start another McCarthy type witch hunt, which I find deplorable, while I concede that the far right is desperate, and will do anything
to regain the White House.

Since I am the only liberal voice on this blog I will continue to oppose anything, and I mean anything that reeks of McCarthyism and other right wing slander.

Not just because their needs to be an opposition voice but because my father and so many others had their lively hoods as well as their professional careers sundered by right wing hatred. I will fight to see it never happens again.

As PWF would say"go ahead and take your take your best shots " You will find I am no push over.

Clayton,

Hope you don’t think I’m labeling Hillary Clinton as a fascist. I’m not. I’m pointing out that the book I referenced does a good job of comparing the political tactics used by the LEFT and RIGHT wing “liberals” throughout history.

An important point from “Liberal Fascism” is how emotion can be used as a self-interest political rallying point to create an issue with the uneducated and uninformed that is really not an issue—a manufactured crisis. The protest of a small group to remove certain “pornographic” books from the county libraries is an example. Yes, this is historically viewed as a liberal approach!

Recently, the Star-Banner seemed to use a similar tactic with the issue of veterans’ suicides to roast Congressman Cliff Stearns on an issue that is already being addressed (with his leadership); the county Springs Protection Ordinance to beat up the county commission on what looks to be an ill conceived Ordinance and perhaps a less impactful problem than what some would lead us to believe.

I guess we will have to disagree on the value of the book. I found it useful in tracking historical events to explain the political actions of the time. You didn’t like it—I did. So be it.

That story about John McCain’s feisty 96 year old mom was a good one. The Wall Street Journal also had a quote from her that sums up how quite a few Republicans must be feeling. Give the old gal credit for some straight talk. Her son sure ain’t given it to us.

POLITICAL JOKE OF THE YEAR—If the Blogmaster doesn’t delete it.

George W. Bush and Bill Clinton somehow ended up at the same barbershop. As they sat there, each being worked on by a different barber, not a word was spoken. The barbers were both afraid to start a conversation, for fear it would
turn to politics.

As the barbers finished their shaves, the one who had Clinton in his chair reached for the after shave lotion. Clinton was quick to stop him saying, "No thanks, my wife Hillary will smell that and think I've been in a whorehouse."

The second barber turned to Bush and said, "How about you?" Bush replied, "Go ahead, my wife doesn't know what the inside of a whorehouse smells like."

Instead of aiming the word fascism at liberals as Jonah Greenburg has done in his book "Liberal Facsism" distorting the accepted definition of fascism, lets take a look at what I call creeping fascism.

President Bush has used signing statements so many times more than any other president, that it seems to me that he is routinely defying the laws that our lawmakers have made in defiance of our constitutional rights.

President Bush has frequently censored and had rewritten scientific opinions by government sources that disageed with his person views IE, climate change.

The administration used false assertions, based on fear to lead us into the war with Iraq, most notably the possesion of nuculer weapons.

To add insult to injury, Vice President Chaney ginned up the same lies about Iran to create new fear and more aggression on the part of the US.

Then you have The Transportation Security Administration list of 5000 to 7500 list of do not fly terrorists that included members of congress, academia, grey haired grandmothers,a bogus list to be sure.

It gets even better, in October of last year the TSA proposed a rule requiring that all flyers be approved 72 hours in advance. If not approved within 72 hours the airline can request approval up until 1/2 hour before flight time. Sorry last minute flyers who arrive at the plane at the last minute, you are out of luck, especially if you have a swarthy skin.Approval is pending.

The appointment of Karen Hughs to assistant Secretary of State to spin our foreign policy abroad or shall we say propaganda desemination, something she and president Bush attempted to do when they saw all the looting in Iraq, then sent the republican part's best spin operative to Iraq.

The Bush administration exceeds even the Nixon administration in secrecy which has enabled it to infringe on our constitutional rights, the extent of which is becoming more obvious as time passes.

Turning the fascism spotlight on liberals rather than on the Bush administration is another fascist trick ued by the old fashioned pre World War 11 fascists. Trick the unknowning into believing the other guys are the bad guys.

The labeling of liberals as fascists will be much more prevailant as the election gets closer. The old hue and cry that liberals are big spenders has been eliminated by the republican party who have become the party of spending. As far as raising taxes George HW Bush broke the myth of Democrats being the party of taxation.

So what is left ? Smear and fear.

Liberals become fascists, an ugly term, used in the same breath as Hitler Mussilin, Franco, Pinochet.

Will there be brown shirts at our doors ? No, the internet will take their place, outing any body and every body regardless of veracity.

Virtue McCarthyism. Think not? How about the swift boaters who did their hatchet job at the behest of Karl Rove? Then the most recent attempt to smear John McCain by claiming he sold out the other POW's to get preferential treatment, the authors unknown.

Oh yes, its going to be bloody out there. It certainly won't be democracy's finest hour.

Clayton,

Many of the points you make about George Bush are the same ones that Goldberg makes in his book describing the liberal behavior/actions of Bush and some other Republicans (including John McClain). I did not detect any defense of Bush in Goldberg’s writings. Did you read the entire book?

Stan yes. The title itself is annoying and the two words "Liberal Fascism ", say it all.The word fascism just sounds terrible. If you read more writings by Jonah Greenberg you will find that he constantly maligns liberals as we know the word , socialists etc.

Then in the book,he trys to stretch the meaning of liberal to suit the content of the book, even after declaring that he himself isn't certain of the meaning of fascism, something the book confirms.

Recently I have been reading about Hitler, have watched two award winning foreign films on Nazism during and after the war in Austria. That represents fascism not the revisionist spin Joshua Greenberg uses in "Liberal Fascism"

Mr. Greenburg better serves his beliefs by referring to liberals as socialists as he often does in other writings.

By the way don't rush out and buy Norman Mailers last novel "Castle In The Forest " which is about Hitlers parentage and life as a youth . I don't know how it passed the censorship at the library. Real trash cloaked in typical Mailer big words and fancy phrasing.

I will return it to the library in Dunnellon tomorrow and go back to reading about economics.

Stan.

Jonah Greenberg says that the administration of Kennedy, Johnson, and Clinton were Fascist. This is where I think he takes the most liberty with the word fascist.

So when you were taking a shot at Hillary and then saying you hoped I didn'think you were calling Hillary a fascist, leaves a bit of doubt in my mind.

Words ending in ist bite. Notice that I did not call George Bush a fascist. I pointed out some symptoms of fascism by his administration, nor did I call them fascist as Jonah Greenberg did Kennedy, Johnson. and Clinton.

We are not talking about Woodrow Wilson, or FDR or the old progressive part or Norman Thomas and his socialist party . We are talking about today not ancient history.

Conservatives are trashing John McCain, Senators Clinton and Obama. That is fair game although it could backfire in November.

Would isn't fair game is using ist and ism words which seem hateful. I will leave that up to extreme left and right wing writers.

AS I have said before, this election is going to be bloody. All the hate mongers are going to come out of the woodwork,"Obama is a Muslim, he went to school at a madrassa,"both lies " and therefore is a jihadist, because all muslims are jihadidists.

This kind of byle pops up in my e-mail almost daily now. The last won said that Jihadism, another ism word, can be traced back to Winston Church. And this is 10 months away from the election.

And if you think that rascism is minimal in this country wait and see what happens if Obama is elected. Remember Harold Ford ?
