Politically Homeless

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters in Marion County, Florida who consider themselves to be "Politically Homeless". We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by "politics as usual". Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others stay registered with a party only to vote in primaries, but no longer identify with the party's current political direction. We encourage you to post your comments.

Open Thread: CANDIDATES ONLY

We are going to try something new between now and the September 5, 2006 election. This thread will be dedicated for the use of any candidate (or Campaign Manager) for any office. You can post information about yourself, position statements on issues, speaking engagements, fundraisers, etc. Basically anything related to the conduct of your campaign. Our only requirement is to be reasonable in the use of thread space. After all, most bloggers don’t read long posts. Keep your posts to no more than 350-400 words.

Don’t forget, you can copy and paste items into the “comments” space or, if you prefer, just e-mail us what you want posted to
politicallyhomeless@cox.net and we will do it for you.

If the Blog Master determines any postings on this thread are “inappropriate” (e.g. too long), we reserve the right to remove them. However, if everyone uses some common sense in posting information and comments, we doubt this should be required.

Assuming this thread attracts reasonable posting activity, we will open a similar thread for the November elections.

Remember: This thread is FOR CANDIDATES ONLY.

Dear Candidates:

Now that the campaign season has officially begun, there are a few things we voters would like you to keep in mind. I write to you as a citizen and, of course, as a registered voter.

You might have noticed that I did not mention if I was a Democrat, Republican or Independent. The truth of the matter is, it does not matter. My party affiliation is totally irrelevant, and I write to you regardless of your own party affiliation, race, gender, or any how well you are known, or not well known in the community.

As you know quite well, the 2006 political season is under way. Voters like myself are aware because many of you have already been visible and vocal. You have asked us for your support as well as our financial donations to your campaigns.

First, remember that voters like me who are responsible and caring will hold you accountable for any intentional negative campaigning designed to distort the truth, create an atmosphere of hostility, and confuse the voting public. Stick to the issues, and stay clear of political "mudslinging" because voters are turned off by it. Your words will be listened to carefully, especially in debates with your opponents, and if your words are not addressing issues important to we the voters, your seriousness about your campaign might be called into question.

Second, remember that serious and caring voters will not forget the promises made on the campaign trail when you appear at town hall meetings, barbecues, schools and churches. Of course, voters realize that every campaign promise made cannot be kept because we live in a real world. I just warn against making promises that are so outlandish and unrealistic, they will not even be able to be considered. Remember a certain presidential candidate who said: "read my lips: no new taxes!"

Third, serious voters - and please forgive me for repeating the word: "serious" - don't like to be taken for granted or have their intelligence insulted by candidates with overly inflated egos. Even with past experience, a huge campaign war chest and a lot of personal charisma, voters still enjoy being talked to and not talked at or down to.

Last, but certainly not least, never disrespect the voters who hold the key to your victory. There are thousands of voters who take their right to vote extremely seriously, and also keep up with the many issues facing us today, and every vote still does count as we know from recent close elections in the past.

As a candidate, if you remember what I have shared with you in this column, whether you win or lose in the campaign for the office you are currently seeking, you will always be a clear winner in the eyes of good, decent and caring citizens.

(This letter is adapted from one sent to the Gainesville Sun by Alachua County resident Milford Lewis Griner.)
