Politically Homeless

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters in Marion County, Florida who consider themselves to be "Politically Homeless". We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by "politics as usual". Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others stay registered with a party only to vote in primaries, but no longer identify with the party's current political direction. We encourage you to post your comments.

School Board: Golden Opportunity For Dems?

The current Republican domination of our county school board may be in jeopardy. Republican infighting and some big egos could set up an election scenario that puts three positions within the grasp of Democrats. The school board is a non-partisan race where Ds, Rs, AND 25,000 registered NPAs (no party affiliation) can vote.

As discussed on another thread, one of the school board members is recruiting other Rs to oppose two of the board members up for reelection. Lo and behold that individual may himself be opposed by a fellow R!

With each of the three seats having potentially 2-3 Rs running against each other, the Dems could smartly place one candidate of their own in each of the three spots. Let the Rs kill off each other via “splitting” the R vote! Then with unity around the Dem candidates, they might easily walk away from the election with all three seats reverting to Dem control.

Will it happen?

I know that Kelly the one who thinks people of my religion (Catholic)are not Christians is the "recruiter". So who is the Republican that might run against him?

The problem is, of course, that there aren't any Dems willing to run. I won't say who the Rep is, but if the rumors I hear are true, Kurt Kelly will be blown out.

(R), (D) or (I) doesn't matter. Just give us teachers three board members who put education of children over politics.

Well, now that the would be Emperor Kelly has recruited David Alvarez to run against Mosley, and Judy Maglio to run against Crawford, seems only fit that Sue and Run might team up and find someone to run against Kelly. They might as well claim credit for finding someone to run against him, since Kelly will blame them anyway.

The question: School Board: Golden Opportunity for Dems" is an interesting one. Since this is a non-partisan election, candidates do not run as a Democrat or as a Republican. "R" candidates will go to great lengths to let it be known they are "Rs" when apperaring before Republican groups, and likewise for "Ds" when appearing before Democrat groups.

There is no "runoff" election as we once know it, so let's assume that two "Rs" and one "D" runs, and there is no majority winner. The top two candidates from the Sept. 5 "primary election" would go on the November "general election" ballot.

With disatisfaction of many with the way the GOP has governed, with one candidate interfeering in the elctions of two other candidates, it could benefit the "Ds" in a significant way, especially since we do not know how the 25,000+or- registered as "other" party voters will fall.

Interesting question.

runoff . . . that we once knew, now know . . . and that should be interfering not interfeering.

The "word on the street" is pretty accurate from what I hear, or enough that Kelly had his Mom, Hank Wittier and others try to talk Parnell out of it, and his Mom is working hard to find issues to use in Alvarez' campaign against Mosley. Even Bobby D has been talking about it. Course Bobby is propably still smarting from finding out that as a Catholic, he can't go to Heaven in Kelly's realm. I want to hear it from Parnell and then I'm ready to get going.

What arrogance Kelly must have to actively recruit opponents for the others on the board. If he has that much time on his hands, maybe he isn't doing what he should to make our school system better.

Focus on yourself Kelly, or you won't be on the board anymore. Actually I can't think that anyone would want to have someone like this on our school board.

Grow up Kelly, stay away from Mommy and be a man.

A quote from a long time politician and a good friend of mine:

“For a party to be successful, you can't deviate too far from that big bubble in the center. If the Republicans keep moving to the right, they're going to lose (the) fight."

School Board candidates take note. There are many voters who are not far right or far left.

LEFT, RIGHT OR CENTER

Where do you play on the gridiron of political ideas? By taking the World's Smallest Political Quiz, you can perform a scientific analysis. If you want to know your score, read on down and copy and paste the link.

You'll be asked just 10 questions, and the test results instantly tell you where you stand politically. It shows your position as a red dot on a "political map" so you'll see exactly where you score.

The most interesting thing about the Quiz is that it goes beyond the categories of Democrat, Republican, and Independent. The Quiz has received a lot of praise. The Washington Post said it has "gained respect as a valid measure of a person's political leanings." The Fraser Institute said it's "a fast, fun, and accurate assessment of a person's overall political views." Suite University said it is the "most concise and accurate political quiz out there."

What is Bobby D talking about with vandalism over the weekend at our high schools, and why hasn't Star Banner reported on it. If a school board member has called OPD to keep from getting the nice kids charged, it needs to be exposed. Even worse if a candidate called. Wonder if they would have called to keep Black kids or plain old common folk had been involved.

At 11:39 AM, May 15, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OPD officer tells me it is not unusual to have a big shot protest charging "good kids" so he wasn't surprised when Kurt Kelly who fights almost all expulsions and discipline issues at schools called to object when OPD tried to charge vandals caught at Vanguard. The surprise was when David Alvarez called to protest and he isn’t even a school board member. Wonder if Kurt’s other recruit, Judy Maglio objects to strong discipline too????

With all of the effort the Star Banner used about Government in the Sunshine on the hospital, you would they would be on this story like fleas on a dog! And to get scooped by Bobby D???? And why does Kurt try to block all the discipline efforts at the school board? I hope Yancey gave him his lunch when he called to protest "the good kids" getting pinched by the cops. No wonder Yancey doesn't try to discuss curriculum with board members!

Come on out SR 200 way and let's have an open meeting just for Kurt.

Can one of you guys explain why anyone would want to block prosection of someone involved in vandalism on public property? I don't care how good the kids are. And why would Alvarez get involved unless one of the big docs involved has promised a big campaign contribution. This whole blog doesn't make much sense to me.

If vandalism is bad enough at schools to hire private security guards, then why not let them and the cops do what we pay them to do. Kelly is paid to set policy on Tuesday nights, not involve himself as some czar. Where is John Lund, Chip Morris and Larry Wittler on this one. Maybe "bobby d" has a role afterall.

yeah there is a story but you can't read it on their website.
Maybe Kurt and David Alvarez called the Banner and got them to block internet access to it. Wish someone would post the story on the blog so we can read it.

At 8:54 AM, May 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, the block on the Banner story has been removed and we are able to read the story. But why is the Banner covering up the fact that Kelly called the Mayor and Alvarez called OPD to get the officer censured for arresting these kids who were. his attitude shows he needs to be replaced.

At 10:24 AM, May 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To quote Mr. Kelly . . .
"There seems like there was absolutely no malicious intentions or anything," Kelly said. "That was folks just having good clean fun, and there is a difference between clean fun and destructive behavior." These are the top six academic students at VHS. They were on the campus with spray paint and other materials to have "just clean fun????" Was it just clean fun at Belleview, where it cost hundreds of tax dollars to clean up the "just clean fun?" Ot to remove the glue from door locks? As someone asked Mr. Kelly, what would his opinion have been if they had come to his house to spray paint it . . . and have some "just clean fun". Or how about if they had spray painted First Baptist Church? And Mr. Kelly wonders why we school employees have no confidence in some school board members.

At 12:27 PM, May 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bobby said what the star banner would not say . . . have to hand it to him, he had the gonads to lay it on the line about these rich kids and the kelly-alvarez effort to cover this thing up. yancey's stand is admirable -- he supports the law. But what he ought to do is get rid of the vcaledictorian and satutatorian at Vanguard, and not let the top six kids walk in graduation. There is a precedent at VHS when they stipped black kids involved in a fight at the school and wouldn't let them graduate -- one of those involved called bobby's show this morning. Maybe the Banner will comment further in the future but someone ought to take kelly to the woodshed for his comments in today's paper.

At 1:12 PM, May 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight, Kelly is condoning vandalism by saying it was only "good clean fun." Does he not realize the impact his statements have on all of the kids in our school system. He just gave permission to any child with influential parents permission to trash our schools.

Hey Kurt, those buildings don't belong to you, they belong to us and if its all the same to you I would like our School Board to protect our schools, our kids, and our best interest. Wait I think I heard that somewhere else, oh yeah, that's what our elected officials are supposed to do. Has Kurt forgotten that he represents all of us, not just the rich people?

I sure hope someone runs against him. Go Parnell!!!!!!!

At 2:21 PM, May 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There are some comments about “parenting” in the discussion about student vandalism. Maybe we all should take note of the words of an 18 year old, from a letter published May 16, 2006 (Gainesville Sun). Note the last sentence of his letter!!

“A Generation's Legacy”

I am appalled at the nightmarish legacy being left my generation by our purportedly benevolent parents. While firmly trusting their own child-rearing expertise, these same parents utterly assured that their children's futures will be nothing less than grim and unlivable.

Rather than curb their insatiable and destructive appetites, the "baby boomer" generation would see our country burdened with astronomical and inescapable debt which will undoubtedly be passed on for decades, perhaps crippling our already unstable future economy.

They would see every aspect of our environment altered, perhaps irreversibly, for the worse; peaceful and productive ties with our allies severed by boorish foreign policy; irreplaceable natural treasures auctioned to the highest bidder to requisition funds for the Middle East quagmire; illegal immigrants flood into our country so corporations can realize a higher profit margin; the minds of the young polluted by scurrilous media output, again for money's sake.

They would see knowledge forsaken in the test score rat race so teachers can meagerly supplement their woefully small incomes; a shrinking upper class secure over 90 percent of our country's vast resources for themselves while everyone else fights in squalor for the rest.

I regret to say that at 18 years of age I am as bitter as an old man, as disillusioned as an author of "The Lost Generation," and I foresee no end to this so long as callous greed and blind selfishness are the defining characteristics of our populace.

It is not someone else's responsibility to facilitate personal change - our elected officials are mere mortals, and often corrupt at that. We must all take the initiative to improve ourselves now. And that begins with you, parents.

Corey Brady,
Gainesville

How about since you are going to let the 6 extremely intelligent students who vandalize VHS, you pick their outfit for the ceremony. Call the sheriff and have 6 orange and white jumpsuits sent over along with ankle cuffs. Then they can stop and pose for a picture with Mr. "just having good clean fun" Kelly when he hands them their diplomas. Good clean humor Kurt, good clean humor.

Isn't it interesting that the big time Kelly defender on another part of the blog hasn't chimmed in to spin Kurt's "good clean fun" comment. See his political card claims he is president and CEO of another new company. All the rest of his companies have gone bye-bye, disolved by the state. This company isn't even the one he lists on the school board board member pages -- that one is long gone. His new company does background checks -- for school boards as he lobbys while in tallahassee on "our school business". Saw his daddy the other night stumping for him at a political function. Maybe mama wasn't making any progress digging up issues for Alvarez.

Interesting that Kurt, Randy, John Lund, Marguerite Cavanaugh, Bobby D & company blast conservative people who previously were registered as Democrats so they could vote in Marion County and now call them RINO when they switch registrations and run as a Republican, but some (at least Kurt and Marguerite) are now actively supporting Alvarez who just changed his registration which makes him a new RINO. At least Sue, a life long Catholic (of course Kelly says Catholics are going to hell anyway) didn't switch churches from small, old line Olivet Baptist Church, to the big socially correct First Baptist with lots more voters like Kelly did. Got no problem with Pastor Ed Johnson who is a great pastor, but I do have a problem with people who use their religion for votes as Kurt always has.

Doubt that will ever happen, but I would bet Bobby could get more catholics to the polls than kurt can get baptists out of first Baptist. that would be a hoot, kurt practicing his political faith by urging baptists not to let another catholic on the school board. He doesn't like catholics, he doesn't like jews (herring), he doesn't like crawford, he recruits a hispanic to run against mosley, he can't stand yancey and wanted to run against him but didn't have the gonads, he thinks vandals are just having good clean fun, just who does he like other than his buddy brad rogers who keeps bad things about him out of the paper.

Maglio is a retired school board employee recruited by kelly to run against crawford after kelly slandered hering and crawford defended hering. he also recruited alvarezx to run against mosley after she sided with hering.

big loser was the county since hering has stopped selling to the county and they now have to pay retail prices for their door handles, hinges and other fixtures steve always sold at wholesale to them.

anybody he recruits to join his "team" wont get my vote or other school people votes either.

I am a firm believer that when the pressure is on a persons true colors will surface. Natural instinct if you will.

200 blogger, if what you say is true about the Kurt "blow-up" at a function that was not even his "party", well there you have it. A cry-baby that will do whatever it takes to stay in power. Too bad the voting public couldnt witness it.

Politicians whose sole agenda is to set themselves on a higher plain above everyone else is truly depressing at the end of the day. These are the ones who always seem to stay in office.

Happy memorial day to all!!

Here’s a thought. Let’s re-elect all three school board members. Then we can watch a constantly miffed Kelly for the next four years, being on the short end of many 4-1 and 3-2 votes. With Mosley, Crawford and Herring making Kelly’s life unbearable. Kelly would be “politically impotent” on the board. Even more so than he is now.

Kudos to the Star Banner!! Their editorial today did a fair and balanced job of covering the student vandalism situation at three county schools. Importantly, they were correct in “thumping” Kurt Kelly and David Alvarez for trying to strong arm the OPD in its investigation. Thanks to Mayor Ewers for standing up to Kelly and Alvarez and supporting his police officers---he did the right thing.

Anyone think political contributions by the students’ parents might have motivated both Kelly and Alvarez? Maybe we should check to see if any of the students’ parents are contributors to the campaigns of these two gentlemen.

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. A similar saying goes for kids. There are no bad kids, only bad parents. Sums it up for the situation with the Vanguard students and vandalism.

banner got it right. no one wants the kids squashed for what was probably a prank. likely that kelly and alvarez involvemant caused the stink and got the story in paper to begin with. next you can expect him to cry baby that the banner is always pickin on him. hope he remembers that he told steve herring school board members have to be above reproach. like, yeah kurt. right on.
mayor and cops come out on top.

I visited with a friend who actually knows the kids involved at Vanguard, and he is convinced they meant no harm, only planned to paint 2006 on frisbees, stab a fork thru the frisbee, and tape it to the door. They are members of the frisbee club at VHS. He also concedes they used poor judgement in going to the campus after mid-night. He, like most, people, was astounded at Kelly and Alvarez getting involved especially in an election year. Dumb. He also concedes that there was considerable damage at Belleview, and that armadillos were turned loose in the new Forest High School (that must have escaped the Banner and Bobby D.) You know, it is just like I told my son many years ago, "if you are not where trouble is, you will never get into trouble." Fortunately, he understood and never got into trouble. But he knew I wouldn't call the Superintendent, the Mayor or the Assistant Chief of Police.

Does anyone actually know that Judy Maglio is even thinking about running? I checked votemarion.com and I saw that there's a Joyce Romanski running (I think that's the name). Anyone know who the heck she is?

As much as I don't care for Kurt Kelly, I'd vote for Judy Maglio and tell the rest of the world how great she is. She's a former teacher of mine and one of the BEST people I have ever known. She would never make a decision that didn't put students first.

The best line in the S-B editorial about the student vandals at Vanguard:

“But as dumb as the alleged prank was going to be, perhaps the dopier move was perpetrated by School Board member Kurt Kelly and businessman David Alvarez, a School Board candidate, who needlessly leapt into the case.”

A case of dumb and dumber!!!

Have a Happy Memorial Day everyone.

Those city slickers sure outsmarted all that brain power on our School Board, including Ron Crawford who was on the giving and receiving end of being outsmarted.

I heard on the Bobby D Show that he has been approached by SR 200 people to run against Kurt Kelly. I don't know how he can run, he doesn't live in the district. He continually puts down the school system. But based on his stance on the FLAS school, he will get the black vote. He said on his show his ex-wife is from Colombia South America and his oldest son is spanish so he probably speaks spanish and will get the huge spanish vote in marion oaks. He will get the SR 200 vote, he has been doing a spagehtti dinner at Queen of Peace once a month forever. He has also said on his show that he is against prayer in school and intelligent design, two issues that Kelly is for, which might get him some liberals. He is more fiscally conservative then Kelly based on what he says about spending. He is very active in Belleview politics and from what he says on his show he goes to church at St. Teresas almost everyday with his family. So he will get that vote. Plus he does a weekly coaches show for high school sports plus he broadcasts Belleview Football Games, Vangaurd, Lake Weir, Forest, and Belleview Hoop Games plus he played sports himself so he will get the jock vote. Plus he obvioulsy wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth based on the fact that him, his wife and six kids live in a small house in Belleview. Which the average person likes. Plus he will get support from Herring, Mosley and Crawford, all three have been betrayed by Kelly. He sells window blinds so he is in peoples homes everyday, what a way to get votes. And most importantly is he is on the radio everyday for two hours and love him or hate him he has name recognition, more than any other person running in any race in the county. I don't agree with half the stuff he says but he does make a lot of sense, does give everyone a chance to speak and never backs down, even to Kurt Kelly. He is the only public figure that has gone head to head with him and has won. I guess thats why Kelly won't go on his show anymore. Just think, if Bobby D ran and won we won't have to listen to preaching at the school board meetings by Kelly. Oh I forgot, based on all the work he has done at the old gospel station, plus how he has kept that music going on his new station he might even get the Southern Baptist vote, at least Bobby D doesn't hate any religious group. He even sponsored a Gospel sing on the square one Christmas. And he has that baptist minister on his show everyday. If he ran and I was Kelly, I would be scared.

Anon, you have a lot to digest for an old radioman between holes on the course. your analysis sounds reasonable plus other stuff about kurt's businesses that i hear around town. his demand that hering be "above reproach" make steve appear to be a "saint" compared to kurt. judgement? well, at least i think bobby really does believe what he says. kurt is like the old politician who says one thing on camera and does another. let me think more about your comments. you are asking a lot from the old radioman.

At 10:39 AM, June 09, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's put this "above reproach" thing with Steve Herring to rest. In watching school board meetings and following politics as I have, Steve Herring is a honest broker as a businessman on the School Board. His bids on school door furniture have been honest bids, where he makes litle or no money. He has tried to help schools. As a person, I like him. He is not a pompous, phoney who grandstands. He says little, may not be the most arriculate person serving, but he is sincere, he helps other people, he contributes to fund raising efforts of schools and other groups, he is committed to our school system, and his bids were above reproach. In fact, just six weeks prior to Mr. kelly's grandstanding against Steve, Mr. Kelly voted to approve the same type bid.

(For the record, I have never been involved in assisting in any of Steve's campaigns, so I am not his flack. I am just tired of the phoney pontificating on camera at the school board meetings.)

Understand that Ms. Cavanaugh is promoting Alvarez over Sue Mosley. I thought the role of the REC and State Committee people is to promote all Republican candidates, not just “certain” ones. A good example of why many Republicans are getting fed up with the Party’s so called leaders. The 2006 election results may very well show how upset we are with a few people who are trying to hijack the Party!

I don't think some of you folks realize or respect how much influence Kurt Kelly has in the local Republican Party. He may be even more powerful than Randy Harris. I have heard that Kelly is the one person that Harris will back down from. Kelly could become the next leader of the local Republicans, if he wants to. Run whoever against him for the school board and he will wipe them out.

I just couldn't resist. I know I have my own forum to express my opinion but please forgive me, I just had to. Kelly as powerful as Harris, someone is smoking crack. Harris back down from Kelly, in what lifetime, you have a better chance to see Moses part the Red Sea than to have Harris back down to Kelly, especially on an issue that he feels strongly about. Lets look at who we have in office as Republicans and compare who is more liked, respected and more importantly a better overall republican.
Crawford or Kelly: Crawford and Kelly are both socially conservative but Crawford is much more fiscally conservative, my vote Crawford.
Mosley or Kelly: The facts: When they both ran in 2002 Mosley got 63% of the vote over an incumbent and Kelly got only 52% against two canidates who had no money and have never been in office and lets not forget Kelly was an incumbent and appointed by the govenor. Msley and Kelly are both socially conservative. Mosley is more fiscally conservative. my vote Mosley.
Herring or Kelly: Herring is definately more fiscally conservative and when it comes to pro-life and social issues I see Herring everytime there is a big pro-life event, not just there shaking hands but working the event either cooking hamburgers or getting his hands dirty. my vote Herring.
Zanetti or Kelly: She barely beat liberal Maines. Zanetti has voted the same way Kelly has on every issue. Or is it the other way around, has Kelly been following Zanettis lead. Maybe she is the most powerful Republican in Marion County, Kelly seems to vote the same as her on all the issues. my vote ?
Now county commisioners, Kesselring, Payton, McClain and Stone. All consider themselves good pro-life Christians I have my doubts only about one on that issue. All have much more successful personal businesses than Kelly. Stone thumped the #1 dem by 10%, McClain beat a long time incumbent in the primary and beat a dem that had huge name recognition. Payton was in a weird election but still won and my prediction is that he wins in a landslide this time around. To say those guys would follow Kelly into battle would make a great Sat. Night Live skit. And we also have Baxley and Cretul. Do you think their going to pass the torch to Kelly, lol. oh yeah, Kelly more powerful than Cliff Sterns, maybe when Sterns retires and moves to Colorado. So lets put them in order and see if you agree.
Sterns, Baxley, Harris, Cretul, Mosley, Herring, Stone and McClain, Crawford, Payton & Kesselring, Kelly, Zanetti.
What Kelly has to worry about is not how powerful he is but how many of the real powerbrokers are running and hiding because of his positions on three big issue: Going against school choice by heading the charge against the Flaas school. The Herring "beyond reproach" garbage, where Kelly drew a line in the sand and tried to make Herring, a much better Rep. then Kelly, look bad. The Vangaurd tresspassing incident. Where every politician in the county ran and hid for a few days not to have to make a comment on how they felt on the issue. It was probably the worst political move I have seen a politician make in this county during an election year. Everyone except Kelly and Alverez was on the polices side. Enough said. Kelly just better get on his knees and pray that someone with any name recognition at all doesnt run against him. If someone does I have a funny feeling Kelly wont like the outcome. I guess I wont get him on my show after this one. Oh well, he hasnt responded to my last 2 emails anyway.

What... well I'll move to the top of the body rather than the middle, and say... what courage to outline the littany of events and issues and name names. Let me only say that I could not have done it more truthfully of better.

Bobby D did leave out one issue that will haunt Kurt in every election--his position on Catholics doomed to hell.

He left one more issue out -- sincerity. Herring and Mosley have it. Kurt does not.

Bobby and I have had strong disagreements, but on this one, he is 100 percent on target.

On the Kenny-Alvarez issue with the Vanguard kids. It is beyond anything I have heard in my 50 years of newspapering and following politics to have an elected official claim "it was just clean fun" and and allege to a public official that the school system and law enforcement had failed by not telling kids they could not trespass on school property after midnight with items that could be used for vandalism (regardless of their real intent). If that is the type business training that Kelly and Alvarez have used in guiding their companies, it is training not needed in guiding the fortunes of the 40,000+ kids in our school system. I am not sure which one is dumb and which one is dumber.

Bobby, very good summary!

Kelly's opinion on the after-life future of Catholics will also haunt him if he has any reasonable competition. You were kind in not making an issue of something that I know must impact you personally. Kelly and Alvarez are two of a kind and we for sure don't need them both on the board.

I might not agree on your rankings at the top of the list, but you have the local Republicans grouped about like I would group them. The top 4 rankings are all interchangeable in my opinion. Each of them are about equal in being "good Rs".

The School Board election is a very important one. If you have any radio programs planned to discuss the School Board election, please feel free to post the date, time, etc. for bloggers to tune in. We won’t consider this advertising, since it would directly relate to the issue of the School Board election already being covered on our PH Blog. The more information people have about the candidates and our school system challenges/problems the better.

It seems that one of the current Board members may be more interested in playing “power politics” than better performing his elected duties to represent students, parents, teachers and taxpayers. Voters need to find out.

From what I learned, Microdyne screwed its investors by flooding its distribution channel with products to increase its sales bookings. The result was a huge (80%) stock price decrease and major financial troubles for Microdyne.

Do we need an executive associated with something like this on our School Board? Although, maybe he can figure out a way to inflate our FCAT scores!

As I have said earlier in this blog about a person's true colors coming out under pressure, watch what happens when Parnell Townley announces to run.

The Kellys (mom, dad, kurtie boy) will take it up a notch. I would suggest that Mr. Townley could put his name on the ballot, spend the summer in the Bahamas, not spend a dime on the campaign and still get 40% of the vote.

You are correct, Kurt has taken lots of dollars from developers and the construction industry. But so have others as well. It is a fact of life that it costs money to put on a campaign, and developers are the ones who have the dollars to contrribute. But some of Kurt's statements and actions recently have some of those who did contribute looking somewhere else.

In this morning's banner, " ... Kelly said he plans to lobby state legislators about changing state regulations to issue funding to school districts based on growth projections.

"We have to get as many built as soon as possible," he said. "This (growth) is something I have always said would be a problem if we didn't act soon. And now here we are. We need some changes so we can get ahead."

I will bet lunch you can not find where he ever always said this would be a problem. In fact, in the last personal discussions we had over impact fees, he promised he would NEVER be for an impact fee, that it was unfair. He told me he had "promised" the developers there would be no impact fees. When he saw he had lost the school board majority who moved to support impact fees when the county commission threatened to impose them for the school board, Kelly then moved to where he was the leader to fight growth and impact fees. That is a phoney claim. He sat idly by and watched us move from a serious problem to a criss with no leadership -- not even one of "in the eye of the camera" pleas.

And speaking of lobbying, who is the county's lobbyist in Tallahassee who has access to all those legislators and state agencies? Kurt's sister, Natalie.

Picture painted by Star Banner is pretty glum. We have never had leadership from the School Board battling to get developers to help pay for their growth until Herring and Mosley began to talk with them and explain they HAVE to help, or people will quit moving here and quit buying their homes. From within the system, believe me, there was no lifting by Kelly or by Crawford.

If the school board and county commissioners don't start working better together on growth management issues this county is in deep s...

I think Townley would be a good selection to the school board to help in this regard. He has faced the good and bad of planning and understands how the school board should work the issues. He'd be a good and respected school system representative to work with the commission. Kelly would be (and is) more interested in who wins politically than in solving the problem.

A question from someone on June 6, ”why did kurt want to change Jessica's law so his partner could work better?”

I’d like to know more about how Kurt Kelly trying to get Jessica’s Law changed relates to one of Kelly’s business partners. Did that person commit some sort of crime or something related to that law? Anyone know?

At 12:01 PM, June 13, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd like to know too.

At 1:10 PM, June 13, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Short answer is yes, His business partner is currently out on bond pending trial for an accusation of fondling his two underage step daughters.

Keep in mind these are only allegations. It is entirely possible that they are false.

One of the questions at last nights Idea Florida meeting at sss was about jessice's law. Someone complained it was costing the schools money to do investigations. Being charged with a crime might make it difficult to do background investigations under that law.

At 4:24 PM, June 13, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess I missed this, but what kind of business are Kelly and his partner in? I hope it is nothing dealing with children.

At 7:50 AM, June 14, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

they operate 3d background screening, making background investigations for employers, and, well, school systems checking backgrounds of employees and vendors for 69 dollars a pop

At 11:06 AM, June 14, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks. I better understand the sensitivity of the business partners potential crimes as it relates to the type of business they are in. Kind of like the fox protecting the chicken house. As someone said, these are only charges at this point. However, there are still some partner integrity, morality and character issues that I would have concern with in the type of business it is.

Anon, I am curious why you would not vote for Kurt who pictures himself as ONE of the most powerful, if not THE most powerful political leader in Marion County, who has such a wonderful smile, is so good looking, who left a small church where he was on the ministry staff to be better situated politically at the largest Baptist Church in MC, who has studied the scriptures and found that Catholics are going to hell, that women should not be in positions of leadership, especially should not be reading the scriptures in church and hsould never be preachers, who is better than Jesse Jackson at finding a camera to pose before, who wants to change Jessica law, who has not succeeded in business since he was a yellow pages salesman but claims such business expertise, who now investigates the background of others with a partner with a background that is in question-well the coffee is ready and I gonna go. But please tell us why you would vote for a reformed republican (Darlene who is now a dem) over my old friend Kurt.

"edisrevir"......This whole appealing to veterans thing is a crock! I know that a local guy named Hank Whittier tells candidates that if they get on his “good side” he can deliver the veterans vote for them. He has attempted this in the past and has not been all that successful.

Whittier doesn’t care whether who he supports is a veteran or not. As long as candidates suck up to him, that’s all he is looking for. I wish he would really represent veterans and not just his own ego driven, self interests. There are many veterans like me who won’t be told by anyone claiming to represent them how they should vote. We are a pretty independent group.

anyone know the owner of kurt's competitor company? I hear he made some promises to her and then went behind her back to do the exact opposite. doesn't sound very spiritual to me.

I've just got to say that this blog is probably the single best source for Marion County politics. I'm so glad I found it.

Curious, you asked--why would I vote for Darlene Weesner over Kelly? Simple, I trust her!

200 Blogger,

The owner of Kurt's business competitor is Lola Gonzalez of Accurate Background Check. The business she runs is a reputable one with backgrounds completed by trained individuals that were subjected to intensive background checks themselves and can be again at any time during their employment as well. This is a company that Kurt should model his own after. I doubt that Accurate has any pedophiles or alleged pedophiles on their staff. Also note that Lola Gonzalez is extrememly active in the community herself and is able to be so without playing all of the political and cowardly games that Kurt does.

Suggest we keep track of any local big wigs who contribute to Kelly’s campaign, list them on the blog and have bloggers contact them and ask them why they contributed. The contribution lists are open to the public. Maybe some of the contributors would even be willing to come on the blog and give us some information about Kelly we should know. What do you think?

Anyone who tells you they can bring home the veteran’s vote in this county has been smoking crack (to borrow a phrase from Bobby D). Hank Whittacre has about as much of a chance of doing that as a one legged man winning an ass kicking contest!

And yes, I’m a veteran also.

Well now I’m really disappointed in Kurt Kelly. I was about to give him credit for going out and getting a Hispanic candidate to run for school board. I find out on the blog that David Alvarez is not even a blood-line Hispanic. Do you think they might be using Alvarez’s name to try to “fool” the Hispanic community into voting for him? Naw, Kelly wouldn’t do that----would he?

At 8:25 AM, June 16, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd be surprised if Kelly even knew there were Hispanics in Marion County.

whooa there nellie!!!! you are jumping to conclusions about kurtie boy sponsoring someone to run for govt school board positions. Nah, not kurtieboy. Why he has even denied it.
But he HAS introduced the non-hispanic-with-the-hispanic-sounding-name many places, holding him by the hand (figuratively speaking that is) and guides his every step, and what he dont guide, Mama kelly does. She researches issues for him, digging thru files, and trying to find something he can use against mosley who, if you take the time to research yourself, will find that she has come up with all the issues kurtie boy now champions, from veterans to construction costs, from impact fees to discipline, from no-sex-in-the-schools. whoooops, mistake, cause kurt did find one issue none of the other four could find to champion -- trying to censure a cop who found six young adults on a school campus trespassing at night with spray paint, and kurtie boy calls the mayor and complains about the cop and is dump enough to try and justify the kids behavior in the osb--the stupid 'just clean fun' comment. have to give kurtieboy a red star for that issue. duh!

fiscal conservative says the microdyne financial history doesn’t look like anything good to tout David Alvarez as one of those high-flyer business executives. friend tells me there are many in ocala who invested in microdyne and lost big time from the business practices. flooding its distribution channel with products to increase its sales bookings -- that sounds like enron or worldcom. wish someone would research the truth. now is when we need the old al lee or ferguson digging and reporting. maybe osb will come up with something.

Interesting stuff.
If I was going to attend the GOP exec committee meeting Monday night, I would ask these questions of the Anglo with the Spanish surname:
1. Why did you call the Asst. Chief of Police and urge the censure of the beat cop for making an arrest of people who obviously were trespassing on school property with a can of spray paint after midnight? Only one other person in Marion County thought to try and blame the cop for doing his job.
2. Do you really believe it is the fault of the police and the school system for not teaching these young adults not to trespass after midnight on private or public property. Do you not realize the tremendous cost to private property owners and the public for cleaning up spray paint on buildings and other damage? Perhaps you could get Mrs. Kelly to get you the budgeted money to clear up vandalism.
And of Kurtieboy:
1. Why did you protest to Mr. Yancey that your daughter's friends in the IB program had been detained for an obvious act of vandalism, no matter how small. Other school board members have been calling for stronger discipline and accountability while you have protected the stronger accountability policies. Did not your own mother run for superintendent on stronger discipline and accountability issues?
2. Wny would you even think to call the Mayor and protest that a hand working beat cop who was doing his duty and the job we all pay him to do should be censured and the charges against the CHS six be dropped. Would you not concede that was one of the "stupider" thinks any elected official has ever done in these tough times of trying to raise accountability standards of our students and our elected officials?
3. Do you really believe this act of "good clean fun" should have been ignored?
4. Have you ever made these type calls in behalf of any other group of students from a lower social or economic status, and have you ever gone to bat for any students detained who were non-anglo?

The question of the day: Is Kelly going to have an opponent or not?

Also, it looks like we have two REC DROPOUTS. I did not post the last set of comments. OK with me though, I agree with what was posted and I imagine there are many REC dropouts in this county.

Hope Parnell enters the fray!!

I have really learned quite a bit about Kurt Kelly. Enough to know we need someone more dedicated to the schools and not so much to politics.

At 9:05 PM, June 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I find it very unfortunate that so many people seem to think Mr. Kelly is not doing a good job. I know him and know he is a man of integrity. This will come to bear during the election, if he even has someone opposing him, which I doubt very much. Perhaps some competition would be good to show people how much support there is for him in the county.

At 8:13 AM, June 19, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agree, having Kelly run against a good opponent would be good for the soul.

P.S. to above comment. Doubt there are any good opponents. Most potential good opponents are too busy doing other more important things than to get into politics

Wonder if anyone from the REC has the integrity to ask kurt the questions someone asked above in this thread? I will give them the benefit of the doubtr since I want to go along with kurtieboy's "above reproach" philosophy. Tomorrow I may change my mind about the REC. NOT!!!!

This post has been going on for over a month now and there hasn't been much talk about the original topic - Dems winning school board races.

Well, no Dem candidates. Thinking back over previous posts, I think the only Democrat mentioned was Sizemore. Can anyone even think of one possible Democratic candidate? Anyone?

There was one other Dem mentioned--Bobby James. Doesn't look like that will happen. That's a shame.
