Politically Homeless

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters in Marion County, Florida who consider themselves to be "Politically Homeless". We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by "politics as usual". Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others stay registered with a party only to vote in primaries, but no longer identify with the party's current political direction. We encourage you to post your comments.

Judge John G. Roberts--A Supreme Choice

The selection of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. by President Bush as the replacement for Sandra Day O’Connor is an excellent decision. The President’s choice was based on Roberts' superb judicial qualifications, practical-conservative philosophy, and respect by his peers; not his stance on the single issue of abortion.

Judge Roberts is young, intelligent and seems close to Chief Justice William Rehnquist in judicial philosophy. Unlike Justices Scalia and Thomas, Roberts will likely be more respectful of the Court’s past rulings, and not as willing to overturn judicial precedents. He will interpret the Constitution and not attempt to rewrite it.

Roberts' stand on social issues like abortion, school prayer, display of Ten Commandments, etc. is not well known, and will not likely be known until he takes a seat on the Court and issues an opinion. His stand on Roe vs. Wade, in particular, will remain unclear. It has been demonstrated in the past that judges, like the rest of us, can change their minds over time. Therefore, his current position on these issues is a less relevant consideration.

The abortion rights issue won’t go away even if Roe vs. Wade is overturned. This issue would simply revert to the state legislatures to determine, and we all know each state will legislate differently on the abortion issue.

Roberts' selection will not tilt the balance of opinion on the Court either right or left. If anything, he may well fulfill the centrist position that was often exhibited by Sandra Day O’Connor.

Judge Roberts is a fine pick for the Court and should be confirmed soon, without political wrangling.

Please give us your opinion/comments?

judge roberts looks like a fine candidate.
Hope the dems will remember they did not get a single answer to questions like abortion from judge gineburg, including lehay and schummer and kennedy. that is the standard the senate should use on judge roberts.
I dont want a judge so closed minded that he would tell me what he would rule before he sees all the facts and has an oppoortunity to use his judgement.
just hope the right wing fingers dont go after him because he is not right wing enough. they are like dems -- they eat their own.

Judge Roberts is a good choice. I predict he will come through the Senate hearings with just a handful of Dems voting against him. The loonies like Kennedy, etc. will never accept anyone our president wants on the court. The person commenting above makes a good point about the double standard the Dems have when it comes to questioning its appointees.

Roberts should not be confirmend unless he specifically states that he will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade when he becomes a justice. If republican senaters don't here this answer during his questioning they should not vote to confirm him.

I'm for the appointment of Judge Roberts. I hope that it can be done rapidly. And before the Democratic far left can complete an independent investigation and discover that Roberts picked his nose when he was three years old! That might cause quite a debate to take place over his nomination. Possibly even a filibuster.

How could this guy not be a winner. He's well educated; good looking; smooth talker who will be hard to pin down on his position on many issues during Senate interviews; will be on the Court for 20-30 years; is already pegged as too conservative by some special interest groups and not conservative enough by others. The Prez done good on this one!

Ed,

You really think all the republican senators won't vote for Judge Roberts unless he says he will overturn Roe vs. Wade? Get real! That question is a non-issue in the whole selection hoop-la.

I agree that Judge Roberts is a very good nominee for the Supreme Court. I am not optimistic that he will have an easy time in the Senate process. However, I believe he has the background to make it through. Also, he seems a pleasant and personable gentleman.

Abortion rights should be a secondary consideration. Who knows how any judge might rule on this. What they say and what they do are not always consistent. The past proves that. Your personal position can be different than your legal position.

I am a female Democrat, and am pro-life. I don’t make my personal position on this issue one that everyone must agree with. Unfortunately, the abortion issue has become so polarized that you must be on one side or the other. I hope that Roberts remains non committal in the hearings. Let the facts determine how he rules, not his personal or religious opinion.

So the president screwed the press by not appointing the lady Judge from New Orleans, and now, as they catch their breath, the witch hunters are after Judge Roberts to try and find something to furnish Schumer, Lehay and Kennedy to use in the opposition. Meanwhile, he brings his wife out with his two adopted children, and they capture the attention of many of us. Now all we have opposing him are the press, the far left and the far right. Meanwhile, the big center that actually controls politics are a winner again.

Judge Roberts looks like a good choice to me. However, TV ads, pro and con, are already being used. Hope his nomination decision is not made by the media. Can't wait to see where the Star Banner editorial staff comes out on Roberts.

I agree with Stan. His comments are humorous but there is much truth to his message. The Dems will look for anything to railroad the Roberts' nomination.

I'm a Democrat (a frustrated one) and support Roberts for the Supreme Ct. Don't think the Dems could come up with a better person than Roberts. He hasn't been in the judicial system long enough to have corrupted him.

The Star Banner had a poll result a few days ago that indicated that about 65% of the Banner readers responding favored Judge Roberts. This is probalby good since it will cause the far rigght and far left to question whether they should support Roberts. Neither side usually agrees with the Star Banner.

Roberts is a very good choice. However, he may not go over too well with certain political segments here in Marion County. After all, Judge Roberts is a graduate of Harvard law school, former editor of the prestigious Harvard Law Review, a Yankee, successful private lawyer, university professor, not unfriendly to business, and has a relatively high level of wealth. He probably fits the pattern among some local political groupies to classify him as an “educated idiot”.

The Roberts' nomination will be a piece of cake. The Dems are saving all their ammo to unload on the administration for Karl Rove's big mouth. They may have a case for doing so. Some republicans even agree with the Dems on Rove.

Well it looks like the "digging-up-dirt" on Roberts has begun. The Dems are looking for anything they can find to create an issue about Roberts. The good thing is that it seems to be mostly the far left who is most concerned about his appointment. We need to lease a large island somewhere and put all of the far right and left there and let them fight a war. The winner allowed to return to the mainland and the loser staying on the island forever.

"Ed" thinks no GOP senator should vote for Judge Roberts unless he promises to overturn Roe v Wade. "Ed" must be the screen name for the guy who thinks he is a radio host. Rank and file REpublicans are not so narrow minded as to rest the future of the judiciary on one decision. And you ever wonder why abortion is more important to men than women who are the ones who have to have the babies. Sorry "ED", it's not the most important issue.

So now we have for and against TV advertising campaigns about Roberts. I can’t believe this. Where is our political system leading us? No wonder so many people are turned off on politics and politicians.

Roberts will start to get some flak over the Whitehouse not releasing some of his legal writings. This is not going to be as easy of a confirm as many think.

The democrats are still focused on how Roberts will rule on Roe vs Wade. They are never going to find this out until he is on the bench. Just give it up!!

The New York Times has stooped to a new low. The liberal, rag tag newspaper now wants to examine the adoption records of Judge Roberts’ two children. What on earth does this have to do with his qualifications for the Supreme Court? Give the man and his wife a break on their commitment to adopt two children. Also, I noted the Times have written articles critical of the way Roberts’ wife and children dress. This is unbelievable! The liberals are taxing my patience.

I also heard about the new york times pursuit of Roberts. this is ridiculous. leave his children out of the confirmation process.

Wait until the liberals find out about Roberts' 1985 position on school prayer.

judge roberts recently received a unanimous vote of "well qualified" by the american bar association. don't know if this is good or bad.

Interest in Roberts is losing steam. Just look at the slow down in the number of blog comments.

Good move on the president's part in appointing Roberts as Chief Justice. This should not create a senate blockade. Also, a conservative female can now be appointed.

Roberts is the right person for Chief Justice. He has to be, NOW is against him!

I can't wait for the liberals to go crazy when the Prez. goes with a true conservative to replace O'Connor, now that Roberts is going a different direction. The #2 position will be the one to really create the fireworks in the Senate!
