Who Are The Politically Homeless?

Welcome,

This blog is created as a forum for the increasingly large number of voters who consider themselves to be “Politically Homeless”. Specifically it is targeted toward those of us in Marion County, Florida. However, we appreciate participation from people anywhere.

Who are the Politically Homeless? We are individuals who are frustrated with political parties and discouraged by what we are seeing as “politics as usual”. Many of us have no registered party affiliation. Others choose to stay registered with a certain party just to participate in primary elections, but do not really identify with the party’s current political direction.

Herman Cain, in his book “They Think You’re Stupid”, provides an excellent description and discussion concerning our plight as the Politically Homeless. Both major parties are suffering significant defections, and the ranks of Politically Homeless are fast becoming a force to be reckoned with by the Democrats and Republicans. Both parties can no longer afford to ignore us. To do so will be political suicide for them!

Each month we will post some important current-issue questions for you to offer your point of view. Occasionally, the “blog-master” (or a guest writer) will offer a feature, thought-provoking opinion on a critical local issue.

Open-mindedness and free speech are the only guidelines for your participation. Whether you agree or disagree with what your party is doing concerning the issues we discuss, we encourage you to offer your point of view.

We hope that you will be a frequent visitor/participant in the dialogue generated by our group of Politically Homeless voters.

I'm new to Marion County and will visit this site to see what is happening in local politics.

Great idea!

I never heard the term politically homeless. However, it really fits my situation. I'm a life long Democrat and am fed up with my party, at all levels.

The local party, in particular, is a disaster--poor leadership, no direction or decent candidates. It makes me sick. It looks like my only choice is to register as a Republican and hope we can elect some "reasonable" Republicans.

What a choice!

Glad to see I’m not in this “boat” alone. As a moderate Republican, I am very upset with the local Republican Party. “Behaving badly” doesn’t get close to describing the political tactics being used locally. I’m tired of my rights being usurped; tired of the bullying, name calling, lies and slander that passes locally for “good Christian” political values.

Politically Homeless, you bet! I find it necessary to be a Republican to vote against the current tyranny, and to vote for moderate candidates who have the best interests of all Marion Countians at heart.

I believe the disgruntled Dems. And Repubs., plus the Independent vote has huge potential to create a positive change in Marion County government.

The ideal elected official or candidate for the politically homeless is most likely one that the far right finds too liberal and the far left identifies as too conservative. Not many of them around these days.

Hope lots of us homelsss show up and post and make this a very active discussion forum. Maybe Star banner reporters will find a home here -- they are searching for an identity. Just wish they would get their facts rite before publishing. And it would help if they were timely. I read most of their state and national stuff on other sites a couple days prior

I am really disgusted with politics! As another person commented, Marion County has a slim group to pick from when it comes to politicians. We have only a hand full of public servants who I would say are more interested in the people they serve than they are in pushing their own personal agendas. We are missing having more just regular, salt of the earth, good Christian elected officials like Charlie Stone, David Ellspermann, Ed Dean, Larry Cretul, and Stan McClain. I wish we had more like these guys. I have lived here most of my life and have watched what goes on in politics. I’m praying for a change in the overall political climate. Maybe we will all see the light and stop putting up with the pettyness and self interest that goes on today.

I totally agree with "frustrated Democrat" about our party here in Marion County. Do we even have a Democratic Party here?

Few are there among our elected officials who get involved just to serve. Most of them are making more as officials than they did or could in private life. Exceptions are Cretul who dropped a $65,000 salary as a commissioner to make $27,000 as a state repo and probably works harder now, and Parnell Townley who did not need the money.
Why would Cretul take such a cut? I dunno, but it must be because he wanted to make a difference in Tally, and I think he has. Of course, Parnell didn't cotton to the demands of Randy, his rude friend from McIntosh, his lacky from the lake, the immigrant and the would be radio guy and their far, far right associates, and unfortunately, only about 30% of the GOP turns out to vote in a primary, so the right wing carries the ball.
One of the interesting things is that their recruited candidate, McClain doesn't appear to be as right wing as they thought, so I predict they will begin to snbipe at him soon.

The problem with the local Democratic Party is that it has lost touch with what it used to be. It has become a party of rich elitists who are more interested in wine and cheese parties, black tie events, and pictures in the slick Ocala magazines then the real issues of the common folks. Many of the local party are just flat afraid to speak out on issues in fear of Republicans who hold the purse strings on their livelihood. A sad situation for regular blue collar guys like me. I no longer have anybody to represent my issues. That’s why I can relate to being a political homeless voter.

The Democrats are not dead. They are most likely just sitting back waiting for the Republicans to self destruct. Just look at the mess the commissioners are creating in county government. Soon they will be telling all of us what brand of toilet paper we have to use!

Well it looks like the Democrats are going to make Rove the issue of the month. I wish they would spend time on the real issues facing our nation. Stuff like this is what discourages me about politics.

I really appreciate having a forum to discuss current political issues facing Marion Cty.citizens.

Karl Rove is not just an issue for the Democrats. He is also a big problem for the Republicans. This man is a vindictive professional politican who has no business in government service. He would "out" his mother if she disagreed with the administration on any issue!! Republicans should be ashamed to defend this man. The issue is not just the legality of what he did, but also the ethics.

I hope that a club for the politically homeless of our county is started. I think there would be quite a bit of interest.

Just discovered this blogsite. I am a "ModCon" Republican. I'm a moderate when it comes to social issues and a conservative on government spending and taxes. I don't seem to fit in with some of the local Republican Party's thinking. Politically Homeless is a good description for my situation.

I so agree with many of the comments. I have never felt so politically homeless. I too am a moderate and am distressed by the vindictive nature of the politics in our county.

I completely agree with Stan regarding any candidate needing to be more "middle". However -- it appears Mr. Harris is trying to get to that place -- please, please do not be hoodwinked.

I do not believe the Dems are making Rove an issue -- Rove did that all by himself. Can we think back to what our politicians did to Clinton? "I did not name her name" is similar semantics as was used a few years ago -- If the Republicans spent countless dollars and hours going after Clinton over what was essentially a matter between he and his wife -- "W" and Rove should be held accountable for leaking information for purely political vindictiveness.

I like the ModCon Republican designation--that's me also.

I'm a Democrat and also consider myself a ModCon. ModCon's are not just Republicans. The liberals are ruining my party.

Speaking of County Commissioners........If you have to reside in the district in which you are running, what does the law state once you are in that seat?
